Pon de Rings: A Japanese Spin on the Classic Donut

When you think of donuts, what franchise comes to mind? Most people immediately think of Dunkin’ Donuts, which is unsurprising, as it has more stores established worldwide that any other donut chain. While I won’t deny that Dunkin’ Donuts is proficient at its craft, my number one donut place is a chain known as Mister Donut.

Mister Donut is a donut shop first established in Boston in 1955 by David Slater and Harry Winokur, who, fun fact, is the brother-in-law of the founder of Dunkin’ Donuts, William Rosenberg. The donut chain, which now has its headquarters in Japan, established its first outlet in Minoh in 1971. It now has stores open globally, though mostly concentrated in Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan, and with 1,300 outlets in Japan alone.

There are many locations open as their own stores or in areas like malls and department stores. Each location is set up like a tiny bakery, with vividly painted walls and a beautiful glass display featuring a colorful array of all types of donut flavors varying in flour type, glaze, and more.

Like any good donut shop, Mister Donut offers a wide spectrum of donuts, from french crullers to old- fashioned, and from strawberry frosted to matcha flavored, while occasionally offering runs of limited edition donuts.

However, one donut in particular sets Mister Donut apart from most other chains- the pon de ring. The pon de ring donut is shaped like a ring made of donut holes, and is super delicious! What makes it so special (other than its unique shape) is the fact that it’s not made with regular wheat flour like most donuts, but with rice flour, which gives it a distinct, chewy texture. The original pon de ring has a simple glaze coating, but is also available in a variety of other flavors and frostings. The glazed pon de ring is my go-to donut whenever I visit a Mister Donut, and is also featured on one of their mascots, Pon de Lion, a lion with a pon de ring donut for a mane (hence its name).

Pon de Lion, the main mascot of the Mister donut franchise.

It’s such a delightful experience eating a glazed pon de ring! The shape of the donut makes for convenient snacking, as each donut hole is perfectly bite sized. Every mouthful is amazingly soft and chewy, and the texture, combined with sweet notes of glaze, makes every donut a delightful flavor experience. If you are ever so lucky as to get the chance to try some donuts from this amazing shop, I can’t recommend you try them enough!
