Kawaii Dishes at Rilakkuma Cha-Ya

Rilakkuma Cha-Ya is a super cute restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan that I highly recommend to people who love kawaii (cute) things! Rilakkuma, a popular Japanese character by San-X, is a lazy brown bear. He is often featured with a cream-colored bear named Korilakkuma, and Kiiroitori, a small yellow bird. All elements of the restaurant, from the food to the napkins, display characters from the Rilakkuma franchise.

The restaurant even has a Japanese-style dining room exclusively for pictures!

When my uncle and aunt treated me to lunch there in 2018, and all the food we ordered had some element of the Rilakkuma franchise incorporated. We received miso soup as an appetizer, and even the tofu was shaped like Rilakkuma heads!

One of the entrées that we ordered was the Steak Plate from the Donburi Set. We also ordered a plate of rice balls shaped like bears wearing inari Rilakkuma hats.

They were both so cute and delicious! We also got the Cheesy Pork Okonomiyaki, (a Japanese dish consisting of a mixture of savory batter and other ingredients), and the Grilled Cod Rice Roll (fried rice topped with salmon and drizzled with sauce).

For dessert, we ordered a matcha mille crepe cake, which was made of of wonderfully thin layers of crepes layered wtih sweet cream and dusted with matcha powder. We also had a matcha latte with whipped milk, a matcha latte with whipped cream and caramel popcorn, and milk soft serve ice cream.

The only drawback is that given the popularity of the restaurant, there is a two hour limit for each party, and they also gave me the wrong order- I had asked for a matcha and milk swirl soft serve, and the one I received did not contain matcha. However, my overall experience was still positive; all the dishes were so adorable in their own respects and tasted pretty great! I really loved the novelty of my entire experience; every dish contained some aspect of the Rilakkuma universe, and elements of the facility itself, were Rilakkuma-themed, too. If you’re looking for a cute place to try some Japanese cuisine, I’d recommend a visit to Rilakkuma Cha-Ya!
