Lake George is a great place for a family vacation; the kids can play in the water and the adults can visit a historical museum. That’s what my family did when we visited, and we had a great time!
Before we even saw the water, I just want to note how quaint the surrounding town was: the main street was lined with restaurants and stores for shopping on foot, and we even saw horse carriages and trolleys, which aren’t common where I live!
On our first day, we enjoyed an evening boat ride out on the water. Dusk was falling, and the yellow lights of the shops on the waterfront shining over the dark water of the lake was beautiful! If you get seasick easily, don’t worry: the tour of the lake was very relaxing!

On our way back to book a hotel for the night, we stopped for pizza at Capri Pizzeria and Restaurant. It was your run-of-the-mill pizzeria, and I got a slice of cheese pizza with piping hot cheese and a crispy crust. Although it wasn’t anything special, it was a solid slice of pizza, so I’ll give it 3.5/5 slices on the pizza scale.
The next day, we headed to the Fort William Henry Museum, which was just a short distance from the lake. If you’re interested in American history, I’d recommend it if you ever stop by! It’s a historical location where British soldiers capitulated to the Wyandot tribe in 1757. The fort still stands on the site of the Museum, and if you pay for general admission, you can tour it yourself or with a guide. The interior of the museum held many artifacts and statues, so it’s a great place for history buffs!
Following our visit to the museum, we headed back down the lake. The weather was gorgeous that day, and between the shining sun and warm temperature, it was the perfect condition for waterfront activities. There was a rental stand right on the shore, where you could rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, and paddle boards. I could even see people parasailing with brightly colored parachutes against the blue sky! I decided to try paddle boarding for the first time, which involves standing on a board and using a two-sided paddle to navigate your way through the water. Having never paddle boarded before, I was pretty nervous that I would slip and splash right into the lake. Although I was a proficient swimmer, I was still apprehensive about the possibility of falling right in the middle of a body of water that I was unfamiliar with. However, as I moved towards the center of the lake, I realized that I could still see the sandy bottom just fine. The deepest part of the lake is reported to be 196 feet though, so I guess I was still hanging out in the shallower part of the lake.
Both the adults and children can have a great time, whether you’re enjoying the lake by playing in it or sailing over it! And if waterfront activities aren’t your thing, a great historical memorial stands nearby, so you can brush up on your knowledge. Overall, I would recommend Lake George as a fun vacation spot for a family trip!
