Chocolate comes in a huge variety of forms and brands, which is fortunate for people all over the world who identify as chocoholics. Being a huge fan of it myself, I was thrilled to recount what my experience with what I would confidently say is the most high-quality and luxurious chocolate brand I have ever had the pleasure to encounter: ROYCE’.

According to their website, ROYCE’ Confect Co., Ltd is a confectionary company based in Hokkaido, which was created in 1983. Over the years it developed and distributed a variety of different chocolate-based desserts, then opened its first major shop featuring its many creations in America in 2012. It’s located on Madison Avenue in New York, so chocolate lovers living there, rejoice!

The first time I tried ROYCE’ chocolate was in a department store in Taipei, where samples of their white-chocolate covered potato chips (called “Potatochip Chocolate “Fromage Blanc”) were being offered. Now, I am usually not a huge fan of snacks that blend salty and sweet flavors together, but this was a whole other level of snacking that I had never even imagined before. I want to point out how covering only one side of each chip in chocolate is a genius decision, as it creates the perfect ratio of chocolate to chip and prevents one flavor from overpowering the other. The white chocolate was sweet, silky and smooth, and it complemented each salty, crispy chip in a perfect harmony of texture and flavor. These potato chips have been one of the best snacks I’ve ever eaten!

More recently, a friend travelling abroad shipped two ROYCE’ desserts to us, both of which were from the company’s iconic Nama Chocolate line. Nama chocolate refers to a ganache created from blending cream and cacao together, which creates a product with a very velvety and rich texture- it’s very different from the basic chocolate bar you can buy at the grocery store! The two flavors we received were the Nama Chocolate “Matcha” flavor and the “Mild Cacao” flavor. The two confections each came in flat, a textured box, with the matcha flavor in green packaging and the mild cacao in brown. The boxes each contained a slab of ganache cut into 4 by 5 squares, and even came with a little plastic knife to make serving easier- and you know how I feel about food that comes with its own utensils! The matcha ganache was dusted with a layer of matcha powder, and the cacao with chocolate powder.
Onto the taste- both ganaches were dense, silky, and rich. They each melted in your mouth, but not like a regular chocolate bar, which is usually firm enough to snap in your hands, The texture almost resembled butter- it’s very soft and easy to bite into at first, then it melts rapidly, releasing its flavor.

The matcha nama chocolate was sweet and carried the aromatic flavor of the tea, but it was just bitter enough to keep the flavor from tasting artificially sweet, which rounded off the flavor beautifully.

The mild cacao was just as delectable- the flavor of rich, smooth chocolate was bold, and the layer of cacao powder that covered each piece was slightly bitter, which made the ganache within seem just a bit sweeter. The desserts were both so delicious that they were gone in a matter of… well, quicker than I would like to admit! (^▽^;)
Right before I was going to post this article, another friend gifted us with another ROYCE’ creation: Chocolate Wafers “Strawberry Cream” flavor! This snack came in a cute pink striped box containing twelve individually wrapped wafers, each of which were packaged in a bag that matched the color scheme of the box!
The confections were each composed of a tiny, bite-sized square of chocolate covered wafers layered with strawberry cream. The crispy wafers paired very well with the flavor of sweet strawberry, and the rich chocolate that covered each stack was rich and silky! If you like a bit of crunch or bite with your chocolate, definitely give these wafers a try! They also come in Matcha, Hazel Chocolate, and Tiramisu Cream flavor.
All in all, ROYCE’ chocolate sells the best-quality confections I’ve ever tried in my life, and I 100% recommend it to all my fellow chocoholics out there!

[…] With the pandemic still going on, going on long trips wasn’t ideal, so my family settled on sticking with day trips over the summer. So, we decided to visit Mitsuwa, a Japanese market, for some authentic Japanese eats. Mitsuwa comprises a food court and supermarket hybrid, and specializes in Japanese food. When you enter from the front entrance, the supermarket cash registers are to the right, and the food court is to the left. There are also specialty dessert shops, like Mochi Donuts (which are one of my favorite types of donuts and also the specialty of Mister Donut) and Royce’. […]
