For the few days leading up to Mother’s Day this year, our family carried on tradition by doing what we always do for this special day- we scoured through our subscriptions and go-to stores for deals and discounts. Actually, scratch that. We do that for every holiday.

We purchased a Mother’s Day gift box set from Nuts.com, a family-owned business in Cranford that sells quality savory and sweet snacks in bulk (#notsponsored, we just order their products a lot). The box contained products from Kopper’s Chocolate, which is owned by Nuts.com. The company was first established by Fred Stern and European chocolatier David Copper in 1937 in New York, though now it’s located in New Jersey. Kopper’s Chocolate claims to be the first business to distribute kosher chocolates under the Circle K, as well as the first company to incorporate chocolate and coffee in their Mocha Beans.
The Mother’s Day Gift Box contained four different confections: Ice Cream Maltballs, Iced Coffee Bites, Milk Chocolate Gummy Bears, and Cocoa Dusted Almonds.
The Ice Cream Maltballs are essentially elevated versions of Whoppers, which are crispy “malted milk balls covered with an artificially flavored ‘chocolatey coating’”. The Ice Cream Maltballs have four flavors of coating: cookies and cream, strawberry, chocolate, and white chocolate, each encasing a cookie ball inside. Every flavor other than chocolate was almost sickly sweet, so steer clear if you don’t have a sweet tooth. Although the maltballs admittedly taste artificial, I didn’t hate them- I actually rather liked the way the coating melted in your mouth and mixed with the crunchy malt ball within.

The next snack was the Iced Coffee Bites. Now, these were particularly interesting to me because I’ve never had cordials before, which describe desserts with a sweet liquid filling. Each bite was dusted in cocoa powder, and consisted of a crispy dark chocolate exterior with a golden-colored, coffee flavored liquid center. While the flavor or coffee was prominent, the center was slightly too sweet for my taste, and this is coming from someone who dislikes the bitterness of the drink, which goes to show how sugary it was. Overall, I would recommend this snack to people who drink their coffee with about thirty packets of sugar.

Cocoa Dusted Almonds were the next snack, and were my favorite by far. These are almonds covered in a layer of dark chocolate and dusted with cocoa powder. The chocolate coating, unlike everything else so far, was not overly sweet. It was balanced by the slightly bitter dusting of cocoa powder covering it, and each almond was a nutty, crunchy surprise within the chocolate. The Cocoa Dusted Almonds balance the crispy texture of the almonds with the silky texture and smooth flavor of chocolate expertly, and are my top pick for this box.

Last are the Milk Chocolate Gummy Bears. Like the Iced Coffee Bites, this snack was new to me. Judging just by sight, I originally thought that these were just bear-shaped chocolates. However, upon tasting one, I realized that these are actually soft and clear fruit-flavored gummy bears covered in a layer of chocolate. I’m not crazy about the combination of fruit and chocolate (except for maybe strawberry) -if I’m at a party with a chocolate fountain you will never see me dunking pineapple or oranges in that delicious waterfall- but I do enjoy gummy bears and chocolate separately. Combining them into one snack felt like mixing two separate flavors that didn’t really mix well, like I just took a bite of chocolate and chased it with a gummy bear. I didn’t dislike the snack, but it just felt odd.

Overall, the Mother’s Day Gift Box consisted of snacks that weren’t really suited to my palette; three of the four were either too sweet for my taste or were strange combinations. As I said before, although the only snack I enjoyed were the Cocoa Dusted Almonds, I would still encourage you to try products from Nuts.com. They sell such a huge variety of sweet and salty snacks, it’s logical that I wouldn’t enjoy every single one- remember that my tastes might be different from yours, so if any of these snacks sounded good to you, I would encourage you to try them!
