Munchie Log #4.5: Kee Wah Bakery Mooncakes

The Mid-Autumn Festival was on October 1 this year, and my family and I decided to eat some mooncakes to celebrate! You can learn more about the tradition and another brand of mooncakes we tried in my post here.

Kee Wah Bakery is a Hong Kong bakery that specializes in Chinese baked sweets and desserts. As such, most of their store locations are in Hong Kong, though their products are available for shipping. The mooncakes we ate in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival were mini mooncakes from the Kee Wah branch in California, and came in a pack of four individually-wrapped desserts in a metal tin.

Each of the cakes were slightly smaller than the palm of my hand, and had the Chinese characters for “Kee Wah” carved into the top. The inside of each cake contained a darker lotus-seed paste filling than the Joy Luck Mooncakes enclosing an egg yolk. The Kee Wah mooncakes were also not quite as sweet and had a drier, less smooth texture. The crust of the Kee Wah mooncakes were relatively similar to the Joy Luck Mooncakes; it was just as crumbly and light, although slightly deeper in color.

Overall, I think that the Kee Wah Bakery and Joy Luck Palace mooncakes are relatively similar. Other than the size and slight differences in the taste and texture, they both taste relatively similar. If you ever have to decide between the two brands, you shouldn’t be too concerned with whether one will be significantly better than the other- I think both brands are capable of producing delicious mooncakes!
